CHARLESTON POET LAUREATE: MARCUS AMAKER
On the box of each of the three debut-collection candles is the first stanza of a poem: “Warmth” by MARCUS AMAKER, Charleston’s poet laureate. Amaker wrote the poem exclusively for 1670 Charlestowne; it can be read in its entirety on our homepage.
A graduate of the University of South Carolina, Amaker is the author of seven books of poetry, several of which include his original art as well. He was named Charleston’s first poet laureate by the city’s current mayor, John Tecklenburg, the first to be elected after the retirement of legendary 10-term mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr., the longest-serving mayor of any American city.
